As an enthusiast of recreational sports, I cherish nothing more than a family gaming night with my parents, sister, and grandpa. It’s an absolute fun, especially when my nephews join in. I take pride in my decent collection of games and toys, and the additional options brought over by others only add to the excitement.

However, the toughest part for us is deciding which game to play. With such a vast array of options, we often find ourselves indulging in at least 2-3 different activities. So, if you’re grappling with the same dilemma and seeking the BEST GAME for your FAMILY GAME NIGHT, allow me to provide you with a rundown of my top picks.

Keep in mind that when selecting such an activity, it’s crucial to choose something that will be enjoyable for everyone, spanning from kids to adults. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of some of the perfect games, specifically tailored for a memorable family party.

Top Games For A Family Game Night Full Of Fun

Embark on a journey of laughter and friendly competition with these games, played and handpicked to elevate your family night experiences to new heights. From classic board and card games to modern twists, there’s something for everyone to enjoy together.

1. Glow-In-The-Dark Gel Blaster Party

Playing in a glow-in-the-dark gel blaster party

When playing at night, nothing beats the thrill and fun of a playful battle that feels straight out of a sci-fi movie like Star Trek, with everyone shooting phaser guns – not real phaser guns, of course, HAHA! What I mean is playing with gel ball guns in a glow-in-the-dark theme.

In case you’re unfamiliar with gel blaster parties, let me provide a brief explanation. These toy guns shoot water beads, also known as Orbeez or gellets. Made of biodegradable polymer, these tiny beads expand upon being soaked, growing to the point where they are mostly made of water.

And guess what? Some brands, such as Gel Blaster, sell special glow-in-the-dark gellets that can absorb light energy and emit it in the dark.

To host a full-fledged GLOW-IN-THE-DARK gel blaster game party, here’s all you need:

  • Gel blaster guns for each player.
  • A Starfire activator or a similar accessory to activate the glow-in-the-dark effect.
  • Glow-in-the-dark ammo.
  • Protective goggles.

If you don’t have enough blasters and plan to buy some, I recommend getting the Gel Blaster Starfire (both standard and XL versions) since they both come with a Starfire Activator by default. This attachment acts as a feed neck between the hopper and the blaster, charging up the gellets with UV light as they pass through it.

What’s more? To further enhance the gaming experience, you can incorporate a smart target system. Similar to electronic darts, this accessory features segmented sections illuminated with LED lights. For players who prefer target-hitting competitions over shooting at each other, this becomes an essential addition to a family game night.

Most gel guns are rated for players aged 14 years and older. There are a few exceptions with a lower muzzle velocity, suitable for kids who are at least 9 years old. However, below this range, gel blaster parties might not be a suitable choice for them. But don’t worry; if this is indeed the case, the next game has got them covered.

PROS

Depending on the specific age requirement of your blaster, from kids to adults, everyone can have a blast playing this new game for family gaming nights.

The glow-in-the-dark gel beads look extremely cool, adding to the fun.

Gel blaster parties are pretty safe as long as you wear eye protection and follow the safety guidelines.

It is the most recent, trendy recreational activity, unlike many other games.

CONS

While a gel blaster party is exciting, it is not suitable for players below certain age limits.

2. Nerf Wars

When it comes to family game nights filled with fun, finding an activity that engages everyone can be a challenge. However, if you’re looking to combine physical activity with a healthy dose of friendly competition, Nerf Wars is the perfect choice. This adrenaline-pumping game is not only a fantastic way to get the entire fam moving but also encourages teamwork, strategy, and laughter.

With a wide range of Nerf blasters available, from smaller models for younger players to more advanced options for adults, everyone can participate at their own comfort level. This makes it the ideal activity for bringing together different generations for a night of shared laughter and excitement.

In my experience, the game is easy to set up and can be played INDOORS or OUTDOORS, making it a versatile choice for any game night setting. To embark on our adventure, we gather Nerf blasters, foam darts, and safety goggles. Personally, NERF Rival Nemesis is my favorite blaster to play with my family.

That’s not everything! We designate a play area, set up barricades using household items, and let our imagination run wild. The more creative and dynamic the battlefield, the more exciting the game becomes.

Establishing a few ground rules ensures a fair and enjoyable experience for everyone. Consider implementing guidelines such as a “respawn” zone for eliminated players, a time limit for each round, and a safe word to pause the game in case of any concerns.

So, load up those foam darts, don your safety goggles, and get ready for an action-packed family game night with Nerf Wars – where the only thing flying higher than the foam darts is the level of excitement!

PROS

The cost of ammo is less than gel blasters, as you can reuse the foam darts.

The soft bullets are pretty much harmless unless you shoot someone in the eye.

Some Nerf guns, such as manual and slam action, don’t need batteries.

Most of these blasters have lower age requirements- usually 8 years and above.

Being a family-friendly activity, Nerf Wars is an excellent idea for a game night.

CONS

The only thing that I don’t like is to go around collecting the foam darts/balls in the middle of a Nerf battle.

3. Laser Tag Party

Children playing laser tag

While both gel blaster and Nerf battles are fun, they might not be suitable for family games with children under 8 or for those who prefer more safety and avoid cleanup hassles. In either case, laser tag presents an ideal alternative.

In laser tag parties, play with toy guns emitting infrared light beams (not laser) and vests with IR receivers, which are versatile for indoor and outdoor play. What makes it great is its safe projectile-free shooting mechanism and ability to replicate multiplayer shooter video games.

That’s not all! Thanks to its versatility, laser tag has become a popular choice for family game nights. Suitable for PLAYERS OF ALL AGES and adaptable to various settings, it offers endless entertainment. This is also the reason why I personally prefer it for our own gaming parties.

For those planning a laser tag game night at home, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Laser tag guns and vests
  • Optional: Additional toys and accessories, such as the robotic bug by Armogear

What’s more? Purchasing good laser tag gear is straightforward as they typically include both guns and vests. Depending on your needs, you can buy a set of 2, 4, or individual guns to expand your team.

Furthermore, laser tag arenas, often part of larger recreational venues, offer an alternative setting for game nights. With additional entertainment options and food and beverage services available, renting equipment at these venues provides a hassle-free experience.

PROS

In my experience, it is one of the safest games in a family game night, even for young kids.

There are plenty of cool laser tag arenas to play at in case you don’t have the necessary space at home.

Whether you decide to buy a laser tag set or host the game at an arena, it would be pretty budget-friendly either way.

Some facilities offer various unique and exciting game modes exclusively for family nights.

CONS

Compared to other shooting games, laser tag feels less realistic as there aren’t any actual projectiles.

If you’re eager to organize a real-life multiplayer FPS game while prioritizing safety without limiting the fun meter, laser tag is a perfect choice. Purchasing gun sets for everyone is more cost-effective than buying gel blasters or Nerf guns.

Alternatively, renting equipment at a dedicated arena offers convenience and a professional gaming experience. Plus, laser tag arenas often provide additional game modes, diverse battlefield layouts, intricate mazes, and other exciting features for an enhanced gaming experience.

4. Electronic Darts

Throwing soft-tip dart on electronic dart board

Electronic darts isn’t very different from the traditional version of the game, except for the fact that it’s played on a digital dart board with a slightly different gameplay.

You might be wondering, ‘What’s wrong with traditional darts?’ Well, the sharp steel-tipped darts used with traditional dartboards aren’t the safest choice, especially for kids. There’s a good chance that children might end up injuring themselves or someone else.

But guess what? An electronic dart board like Granboard 3S equipped with online games is also much more fun to have at a family game night. Unlike conventional boards, they come with lighting, sound effects, and other cool features.

And, if your board is equipped with a HECKLER feature, get ready for an absolute blast. This entertaining addition brings an extra layer of excitement by either taunting players or cheering them on throughout the activity.

That’s not all! Playing a wide range of dart games on an electronic dartboard is easy, including several exclusive modes that you can’t play on simple boards. Here is what you need:

  • An electronic dart board
  • Soft tip darts
  • Optional: A smartphone, Smart TV, or PC (Though uncommon, some boards come with app-based controls, display, and online games).

Investing in a quality electronic dart board is worthwhile, considering how valuable an addition it would be for family game nights and house parties. Especially if there are going to be kids at the gaming party, consider buying a board with flashy lights and cool sound effects.

If you are looking for a more laid-back night to relax at home while having fun, electronic darts are the way to go. Not only is it an indoor recreational activity, but it also doesn’t involve a whole lot of running around. Kids can still enjoy the games, while parents will have an easier time participating.

PROS

Players can usually choose from 25 or more dart games, sometimes even more than 40.

This is a safe game for families (with kids) as the soft-tipped darts don’t pose any risk of injury.

Playing darts greatly improves your concentration skills and accuracy, while having fun at the same time.

While some electronic dartboards are more expensive, you can easily get a good one for around or less than $100.

CONS

Less physical activity and adrenaline rush compared to Nerf wars, laser tag, or gel blaster parties.

5. Dungeons And Dragons (D&D)

Roleplaying games are something that almost everybody can enjoy, as demonstrated by the recent success of Baldur’s Gate 3. However, RPGs don’t necessarily have to be video games. What if I told you that you can play this fantasy tabletop roleplaying game with your folks on an actual board, rather than on a screen?

That’s exactly the kind of experience that Dungeons and Dragons offers. Popularly abbreviated as DnD or D&D, it’s the best board game for family game night, that allows players to team up and embark on epic quests with Druids, Wizards, Elves, and Dwarves!

What I like most about D&D is that it’s all about fun rather than winning or losing. Children and adults alike can get absorbed into this game for hours, forging their stories through unlimited possibilities.

To start, here is what you need:

  • Game boards such as dungeon tiles or a world map. My favorite is DnD Wrath of Ashardalon, it’s so cool and easy to play!
  • Miniatures (to represent characters and monsters)
  • Dice (including various types like d20, d12, etc.)
  • Rulebooks (to guide gameplay and provide mechanics)
  • Character sheets (for players to track their character’s stats and progress)

Choosing board games like Dungeons and Dragons for a game night is a decision you won’t regret. Trust me – it’s going to be epic as has always been to us. Not only will it provide endless fun and laughter for everyone involved, but it also has the potential to create cherished memories that last a lifetime.

What makes D&D truly special is its emphasis on storytelling. Unlike any other board game, it allows players to unleash their creativity, ensuring that no two adventures are ever the same. It’s this unique aspect that sets it apart and makes it an unforgettable experience for families to enjoy together.

PROS

Dungeons and Dragons helps children think more creatively, enhancing imagination.

It helps foster compassion, inclusion, and morals.

D&D is a board game that just about everyone can enjoy.

It is subtly educational, helping kids improve their math skills and understand probability concepts without making it seem like learning.

CONS

It might take some time to understand all the rules and get a grasp of the game.

6. Jenga

If you’re searching for a family game that’s easy to organize and offers plenty of fun, Jenga is definitely worth considering. This tabletop game is deceptively simple – players take turns carefully removing HARDWOOD BLOCKS from a stack without causing the tower to collapse.

As blocks are removed and added to the top, the tower grows taller and more precarious with each move. This tension builds throughout the game until the tower finally collapses. The winner is the last player who successfully removes and stacks a block before the tower falls, signaling the end of the game.

While Jenga may appear straightforward at first glance, TRUST ME – there’s a surprising amount of strategy involved. Players must weigh their options, deciding whether to play it safe by removing an easily accessible block or take a risk by pulling out a more challenging piece, potentially setting up the next player for a difficult move.

Depending on your budget and preference, you can choose between a standard-size Jenga set or a jumbo one. Here’s what a typical Jenga Game Set includes:

  • 54 blocks of hardwood
  • A stacking guide to assist with tower setup

Investing in a Jenga set is a great idea if you’re seeking a simple tabletop game that encourages strategic thinking without requiring excessive physical activity. The moments of silent excitement and concentration, punctuated by groans or cheers, and the inevitable crash of the tower at the end, create a truly unique gaming experience for the whole family.

PROS

The game is pretty simple – even kids can learn the rules quickly.

Jenga helps refine your motor skills and coordination.

Playing this game sharpens your observation skills and strategic thinking.

You don’t need a lot of equipment or toys – just the Jenga set of 54 wooden blocks.

CONS

Kids might get restless as there isn’t a lot of physical activity involved.

7. Monopoly

If you’re looking to spend quality time with your loved ones playing a fun and laid-back board game, it is an excellent choice for a family night activity. As one of the most well-known classics in the history of board games, Monopoly offers a blend of quick decision-making and strategic gameplay.

FUN FACT: Originally known as “The Landlord’s Game,” Monopoly was created by Elizabeth Maggie, an American woman, to teach economic concepts. Today, it’s one of the most popular choices for family game nights, enjoyed by both kids and adults alike.

While this game requires various components, you can conveniently purchase them all together in a Monopoly Game Set, which typically includes:

  • A Monopoly board
  • Dice
  • Game money
  • Player pieces
  • Property pieces
  • Monopoly cards (for property ownership and other actions)

You can usually buy a Monopoly set for around $30-50 at most stores – a great deal for board game enthusiasts.

While Monopoly may not offer the same adrenaline rush as laser tag or Nerf wars, it provides a unique gaming experience- both enjoyable and intellectually stimulating. It’s a classic game that never gets old, perfect for creating lasting memories with family and friends.

PROS

Monopoly can help children understand basic economic concepts.

Gathering the necessary stuff is pretty simple, as everything comes with the set.

This game can last up to a few hours, making it a great way to pass the time.

Anybody aged more than 3 years can enjoy this funny board game.

CONS

There isn’t any physical activity involved in Monopoly.

8. Indoor Bowling

If you’re searching for a fun and accessible in-house game for your family game night, consider indoor bowling – a simplified version of the popular sport. Unlike the traditional sport, it is played on a smaller 45 ft. x 6 ft. rink mat, resembling a carpet with a block acting as an obstacle midway down the playing surface.

In a game of indoor bowling, two opposing teams take turns rolling miniature bowling balls towards the jack – a stationary bowl placed at the start of the rink. The objective is to get your BOWL as close as possible to the jack, scoring points for each bowl closer than your opponent’s.

Indoor bowling is a straightforward game that requires minimal equipment. Here’s all you need:

  • A rink mat
  • Miniature bowling balls

Both of these items are readily available as Indoor Bowling Set online or at local hobby/toy stores.

Simple yet entertaining, it is an ideal option for family game nights, particularly when time is limited and you want something quick and enjoyable. While it can be played during longer sessions, pairing indoor bowling with another game can help keep the excitement level high and add variety to your gaming experience.

PROS

The game is very simple and fun, with an easy learning curve.

Players of any age can enjoy indoor bowling.

You don’t need to spend much for a setup.

CONS

While there are no major disadvantages, personally, I don’t find it as adventurous as the previous games listed.

9. Obstacle Courses

If you’re hosting a family game night to engage with kids and want to include a twist in the fun, consider setting up an obstacle course – a challenging course filled with various challenges that participants must navigate, typically while racing against the clock. They may need to scramble, crawl, jump, roll, and skip to overcome obstacles placed strategically throughout the course.

One of the greatest things about obstacle courses is the opportunity for CREATIVITY. Whether indoors or outdoors, you can design the playing area using common household items, allowing for endless possibilities. Every kid can develop their own strategy for tackling the challenges, fostering a sense of creativity and problem-solving skills.

You have plenty of freedom in designing your obstacle course based on available space and materials. The easiest and most fun ideas with an Obstacle Course Set include:

  • Jumping (circles or spots drawn on the ground)
  • Leaping over (bars, ropes, or lines drawn on the ground)
  • Crawling under or through (tables, chairs, play tunnels)
  • Balancing (a delicately placed board)
  • Climbing over (sacks, bean bag walls, etc.)
  • Maneuvering around (cones strategically placed along the course)

If you’re looking for family game night activities that encourage physical movement and imagination, an obstacle course is an excellent choice. Not only is it a fun way for kids to expend energy, but it also promotes overall well-being and development.

PROS

Obstacle courses help build body coordination and balance.

This game can go a long way in enhancing children’s strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.

Competing in this game helps refine motor skills, sensory processing, and concentration.

You have a lot of flexibility in choosing the kind of obstacles you wish to keep.

CONS

Setting up a good obstacle course requires creative ideas to make it engaging.

10. Scavenger Hunt

If you’re seeking a classic activity apart from board games for your family night party, you should definitely consider Scavenger Hunt. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor play, it involves giving players a list of items to find.

While specific items can be hidden for players to locate, Scavenger Hunt often involves finding common objects like books, leaves of a specific type, flowers of a certain color, rocks, and more.

For older kids, teens, and adults, you can add a twist to the game by incorporating RIDDLES and PUZZLES to solve. Ultimately, the team that finds the most items or completes the list first wins the game.

One of the best aspects of Scavenger Hunts is their versatility – you don’t necessarily need any props or toys to play. However, you can enhance the experience by incorporating items such as treasure boxes, hidden objects, or a hand-drawn map with clues.

While this activity may not be my personal first choice, it can be a lot of fun, especially if you’re parents organizing a game night primarily for your children. It’s ideal for DAYTIME play, allowing kids to safely explore outdoors, but it’s still feasible with ample indoor space or a large lawn or garden.

PROS

Unlike any of the previous games, you don’t need to buy anything, making Scavenger Hunt a unique option.

This game boosts observational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

CONS

You have limited space at home, and an outdoor Scavenger Hunt might not be feasible at night.

Other Good Games To Try In A Family Night Party

While the family night games I described above are the best of the best, here are ten popular games that you can try.

UNO: Any discussion about party games would be incomplete without the mention of a CARD GAME. Besides being fun to play, UNO is the best card game for a family game night that helps participants hone their skills with numbers, colors, and math. In addition to the traditional version of the game, you can also get themed UNO packs such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Hot Wheels, Mickey Mouse, and more.

Hedbanz: This is a game that players of every age can enjoy. Players take turns wearing a plastic headband and putting a card in the slot without looking at it. Their teammates try to help them figure out the place, person, or thing on the card by only answering “Yes or no” questions.

Bananagrams: Word games are always fun, aren’t they? In Bananagrams, there’s a bunch of letter tiles at the center of the table. The players draw these tiles, trying to use the letters to create connecting words until a player runs out of tiles. Everyone can play simultaneously, which makes this activity if restless kids don’t want to wait for turns.

Chopped: This game is definitely very rewarding for family members who love cooking. Players can select four ingredients from the kitchen, challenging another individual or team to prepare a dish using them in 30 minutes. The winner is determined by points granted by the judges (elders) in terms of creativity, taste, and presentation.

Escape Room-Inspired Games: Escape rooms have become extremely popular for recreational family outings, but you don’t always have to visit an escape room venue to enjoy the experience. You could come up with creative escape room-inspired games to play at home, packed with puzzles, twists and turns, and detective work.

Twister: If you’re looking for an activity that’s packed with hilarity, twister is a must-try. In this game, the goal is to stay on a mat and twist your body to place your hands and feet on different specified colored circles. Besides the fun aspect of the game, it’s also a great way to improve everyone’s FLEXIBILITY and encourage FITNESS.

The Floor Is Lava: Yet another laughter-packed activity for family game night, Floor is Lava is pretty simple. When someone shouts, “The floor is lava,” everyone must jump onto something – anything but the floor. You could introduce features such as regeneration or safe stepping blocks on the floor to make things more interesting.

Dance Charades: In this game, the participants are split into two teams, with players randomly pulling out cards with a type of dance written on them. The player then has to dance it out for their team to watch and guess the type of dance mentioned on the card.

Balloon Tennis: How about just a bit of silly fun? Balloon tennis is exactly what it sounds like – two teams keep volleying the balloons back and forth, similar to playing tennis. The best part of it is that you don’t actually need a tennis racquet – players can come up with DIY makeshift racquets or even just use your hands.

Hide And Seek: While hide and seek might sound too basic, it’s a great activity to keep the kids busy and get them to spend their excess energy before bed. Even grownups could potentially participate, coming up with clever ways to conceal themselves.

Concluding Insights

You have plenty of exciting options from my list when choosing the best games for your family game night. Each of these games offers unique opportunities for fun, laughter, and bonding during parties. Whether you’re looking for mental challenges, physical activities, trivia, or simply good old-fashioned entertainment, there’s something on this list for everyone.

Personally, I feel that gel blaster, laser tag, or Nerf battles are the best as they are easy to arrange, engaging, and enjoyable for everyone who loves action and adventure. If you would rather play something that doesn’t involve much running around, I’d recommend electronic darts.

However, just about any of the games I mentioned can be fun if organized properly and for the appropriate age group. What do you think?
