Do you ever feel tired of waiting four to six hours for your Orbeez to grow? As a person who loves playing with Orbeez guns, I totally get it. I lost count of how often my friends and I made a sudden plan for game parties with barely enough time to get the gel balls ready. Well, I have some good news for you – there are ways to make Orbeez grow quicker than usual.

Whether you need the Orbeez for your toy gun or plan to use it for sensory play, art or decoration, you might be wondering how to make them hydrate sooner. So, I started testing with my friend Orbeez-obsessed friend Kieren. With all our findings, here I will share 8 working methods to grow Orbeez faster and bigger than normal.

Make Orbeez grow faster and bigger

1. Using Warm Water

  • Difficulty: 3/10
  • Effectiveness: 10/10
  • Quality: 8/10

Orbeez grows much faster than usual in warm water than in water at room temperature. Warm water speeds up the process in multiple ways. You may have already guessed the first one – hot water causes the polymer to expand. This is also why water beads are bigger than normal when you soak them in warm water.

I’ll be honest; this method didn’t work out for us on the first attempt because we got the water too hot. Kieren had a bewildered expression on his face as he picked up a bunch of deformed Orbeez from the water. The water was almost boiling when we put the gel beads in it, and it caused them to disfigure and turn into shapeless lumps. Eventually, I learned from this mistake.

However, it turned out the best method when we used warm water at 110 degrees F. The Orbeez took just over an hour to reach the necessary size of 6 to 8 mm, compatible with almost all Orbeez guns. If you want them bigger for other recreational activities, try keeping the balls immersed for one more hour.

2. Keeping The Orbeez In A Warm And Humid Room

  • Difficulty: 1/10
  • Effectiveness: 5/10
  • Quality: 10/10

Speaking of temperature, you should note that room temperature also affects the speed at which the Orbeez balls grow. I’ve discovered that the temperature of the room can greatly impact the growth rate of these water beads. If you want your Orbeez to hydrate faster, make sure to keep them in a warmer room. Just like us humans, these little splatter balls thrive in warmer environments.

Additionally, the humidity of the air around them also plays a role. If you keep them in a hot and moist environment, they will absorb water vapor present in the air and grow even faster! However, if you place them in a cold and dry room, be prepared to wait a bit longer than usual for them to reach their full size.

3. Soaking The Orbeez In Low-pH Water

  • Difficulty: 6/10
  • Effectiveness: 6/10
  • Quality: 7/10

Another effective solution I found is to reduce the pH value of the water. A bit of acidity can make Orbeez grow faster, and thankfully, you can achieve this with common kitchen ingredients. Tap water is usually neutral, with a pH value of around 7. You may still use a pH testing strip to check out for sure, though.

Assuming the pH value is too high beyond 7, you may increase the water’s acidity by adding a few drops of vinegar and lemon juice. I personally prefer the latter for its smell – Orbeez soaked in vinegar smells a bit weird. Although those ingredients were easy to avail and allowed the beads to grow faster and bigger than usual, they became much more sticky and I had to wash them in tap water before use.

4. Using Distilled Or Demineralized Water

  • Difficulty: 5/10
  • Effectiveness: 7/10
  • Quality: 10/10

The size of the hydrated gel blaster balls also depends on the mineral or ionic content of the water. The minerals usually present in water can potentially slow down the hydration process, especially if the water hardness is above 300 PPM. You can make Orbeez grow faster and bigger by soaking them in clean distilled or demineralized water.

However, this may not be a viable option since not everyone has the means necessary to distill water at home. Please note that this is different from simply boiling the water – boiling makes only a few elements (e.g., Calcium, Magnesium) precipitate as their carbonates.

5. Using Bigger Orbeez

  • Difficulty: 2/10
  • Effectiveness: 9/10
  • Quality: 10/10

Are you looking to take your Orbeez game to the next level and make it bigger than ever before? Well, my friend, let me share with you a little tip – the easiest way to achieve this is to start with a larger Orbeez in the first place! That’s right, these superabsorbent polymer gel balls come in a variety of sizes, not just the standard 6 mm to 8 mm, suitable for Orbeez guns.

If you want some seriously big Orbeez, why not try getting your hands on some “large” or even “XL” sized ones? Trust me, these larger water beads will make for an even more satisfying sensory experience. So go ahead, supersize your Orbeez game!

6. Adding Sugar To The Water

  • Difficulty: 0/10
  • Effectiveness: 7/10
  • Quality: 8/10

If you’re like me, you’re always on the lookout for ways to get the most out of your Orbeez balls. And here’s a little secret I’ve discovered – sugar can actually make them bigger too! It’s as simple as adding some sugar to the water before dropping in your gel balls. Just be sure to mix it well to make sure the sugar is evenly distributed.

However, keep in mind that this method may come with a sticky trade-off. Soaking your Orbeez in a sugary solution may cause them to become a bit sticky to the touch. But if you’re willing to overlook that small drawback, the result is some seriously plump and juicy Orbeez!

7. Using Sparkling Water

  • Difficulty: 3/10
  • Effectiveness: 8/10
  • Quality: 7/10

While using sparkling water for growing Orbeez balls is not a commonly used method, in my experience, it will make them enlarge slightly faster or bigger than plain water.

This is because carbon dioxide gas present in sparkling water can help to create a more acidic environment, which might promote faster growth. The sugar content also plays a crucial role here. However, it’s important to note that the carbonation in sparkling water could also cause the Orbeez to become less stable and more prone to popping or breaking.

8. Growing The Beads Away From Sunlight

  • Difficulty: 1/10
  • Effectiveness: 6/10
  • Quality: 10/10

Let me share with you a little secret about Orbeez balls – proper storage is key to maintaining their structural integrity! While heat can certainly speed up their expansion during the growth phase, the powerful UV rays in sunlight can actually cause them harm.

Exposing your Orbeez to direct sunlight can lead to deformities and even cause them to lose their beautiful color. So, if you want to preserve your precious Orbeez, it’s best to store them in a cool, dark place. Trust me, they’ll thank you for it!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Borax help Orbeez grow bigger?

Adding a few Borax cubes to the water before you soak the Orbeez can help the water beads grow much larger than usual. However, I wouldn’t recommend it because Borax can irritate your skin and eyes upon contact. Accidentally breathing it in might also hurt your nose, throat, and lungs.

Does oil help Orbeez grow faster?

Adding oil to the water or soaking your Orbeez in oil won’t help them grow any faster. However, using oil as the soaking medium can make the balls much firmer.

Does alcohol help Orbeez grow faster or bigger?

Alcohol doesn’t make your Orbeez expand faster or get bigger than normal. It is known to dissolve certain types of polymers and can cause the water beads to break down or deform. On the contrary, when gel balls are soaked in certain alcohol like wine, they won’t reach their usual size. Therefore, it’s best to stick to safe and tried methods such as using warm water or adding sugar to the water to promote growth.

What to do if Orbeez are not growing fast enough?

If your Orbeez are not growing fast enough, try to speed up the process by using warm water. For even better results, distill the water and increase its pH value by adding a few drops of lime. Adding a pinch of salt or sugar can help too.

Does salt make Orbeez grow faster or bigger?

No, Orbeez does not grow sooner or larger in saline water. In my experience, the expansion of Orbeez halts when mixing a spoon of salt (NaCl) in the water. The sodium ions (Na+) present in the solution actually block the surface of the Orbeez balls from absorbing water. So, I never recommend using saltwater to grow Orbeez.

So, there you have it – making Orbeez grow quicker is quite easy. If adding anything to the water is too much hassle for you, just use a bowl or tub of warm water instead. Feel free to experiment by combining different methods or even try out new ones. That’s how we managed to reduce the growing time of gel balls to almost a fourth of what it normally takes. Hopefully, you can now make Orbeez enlarge faster and larger than usual without much hassle.

    • Hello Gloria,
In my experience, salt does not effect the growth of Orbeez in the way sugar does. I am 100% sure of this because I have experimented and found out. Have a good day!
